Beyoncé’s New Scholarship Program

Acclaimed singer and songwriter Beyoncé Knowles-Carter revealed she will be offering $100,000 in scholarship money to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The merit-based program known as the Homecoming Scholars Award will give away $25,000 in scholarship money to one student from selected HBCUs in the 2018-19 academic year. The scholarship program is hosted through the BeyGOOD Foundation.

Google.org, Google’s philanthropic branch, has since partnered with BeyGOOD and revealed they will match the $100,000 grant. Thus enabling students from eight HBCUs to enter the scholarship program.

The eight HBCUs include Xavier University of Louisiana, Wilberforce University in Ohio, Tuskegee University in Alabama, Bethune-Cookman University in Florida, Texas Southern University in Texas, Fisk University in Tennessee, Grambling State University in Louisiana and Morehouse College in Georgia.

To qualify, students must maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA. They must major in literature, creative arts, African American studies, science, education, business, communications, social sciences, computer science or engineering. All finalists and winners will be selected by the universities. Winners will be announced this summer.

The news comes one year after the pop icon announced her Formation Scholars Program for young women.
