The best apps to help you pass the time during lockdown
The majority of the world is on lockdown – and while it is important to stay home and protect our loved ones, most of us are unaccustomed to spending so much time in one place.

Luckily, we have the technology, and with it, a chance to make our time more interesting, productive, and fill our days with worthwhile content.

We all have different personalities and different things make us happy when we are on our own. Even with family, it’s good to sometimes carve out a little time for yourself, and/or re-connect with our friends.

Not sure how to spend your time? Read on and pick the apps that best suit your goals and interests.

Everybody’s in Their Homes, and We Can Still Be Creative and Share

Do you love connecting via social media? How about sharing that joke you just thought of?

Engagement with the rest of the world can be a great way to fill out your time, connect, comment and inspire one another.

Aside from obvious choices like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, we recommend you give Tik-Tok a real chance. Sure, you have it installed somewhere on your phone. But have you participated in the challenge with J.Lo, Camila Cabello, Elizabeth Warren, with Drake’s song in the background? Now it’s time to take the camera and finally ‘flip the switch’.

Why? Well, first, it’s fun. Secondly, why not unleash your creativity with mini-videos and get over that stage-fright. And, thirdly, Tik-Tok is the new Instagram, so hop on and meet new people.

Plus, you’ll definitely have laughs, and who knows where your creativity might take you.

It’s Important to Keep Your Contacts Alive and Check-In

Sharing is one thing, but talking face-to-face (or at least over FaceTime) with your cousins, friends, co-workers is just what you might need to feel refreshed.

Furthermore, it’s nice knowing someone cares about you and wants to spend an hour or two just talking.

There are many great apps to choose from: use the traditional Skype, ever-stable Zoom, opt for Google Hangouts or Google Duo, or go from Facebook Messenger straight to video call.

Or… give in to your adventurous side and try out some of the new, hip kids on the block. We recommend House Party, Discord and Marco Polo. These are great, fun apps that will give you better options, a stable network, and hours of fun while talking about those lovely everyday topics.

And who says you can only connect via these apps? Play awesome games online in multiplayer mode, like Chess Free, Risiko, Monopoly, and Ludo Club. When was the last time you played Risiko with your friends and pretended you were a world-renowned strategist? AND had the option to chat? Try it out, you’re gonna love it.

Me, Myself and E-Learning

Alright, so you recharged your batteries and connected to your friends.

But what if you want to use your time more productively? Perhaps learn something new?

A lot of high schools and colleges are currently using Google Classroom to conduct their classes online, so this one is a must.

Aside from that, there are great resources out there for independent learning at your own pace – check out Udemy, which has long been a repository of all courses possible, or CreativeLive and Domestika for more creative courses (Domestika is primarily intended for Spanish-speaking population, but they offer English subtitles and have amazing courses for creatives).

If you prefer reading about things, now might be a great time to subscribe to Medium. Deep stash is another attractive app with a great interface, devoted to self-improvement.

How about learning a new language? Surely you know by now about Duolingo, Babbel and the likes, but you might want to check out Busuu as well – this app offers live interaction and correction of your exercises by native speakers of the language you’re learning.

And – finally – make sure to give your body a proper workout, too, and not just your mind. Check out Nike Training App with currently unlocked premium workouts, or Lean Fitness’ Home Workout – No Equipment, or Yoga / Down Dog, and get moving! Dancers, glide over to Steezy!

Making Money on Lockdown?

With loads of free time, you can definitely afford to invest some of it in earning money.

You can download Fiverr or Freelancer for easy ways to make money doing simple tasks, or serious money if you’re a freelancing expert.

Or – check out the ScholarshipOwl app and apply for scholarships! Browse through hundreds of scholarships and find those that best match your interests! Most of the scholarships are one-profile, one-click away, and those with greater rewards might require an essay, which you can now easily do!

Use this opportunity and free time to craft strong applications and come out of it with better finances.
