Write a Killer Scholarship Personal Statement (w/Example)

Scholarship Personal StatementPersonal statements are a major part of scholarship applications. Writing an amazing personal statement is crucial if you hope to win a scholarship.

The personal statement is your chance to convince the scholarship committee that you deserve the scholarship. While your resume may be impressive, there are likely hundreds, maybe even thousands of students who are just as impressive.

A personal statement is a great way to set yourself apart.

There isn’t one right way to write a personal statement for a scholarship. But, you should make sure to include the following five elements:

Personality

What makes you unique? No, not your 4.0 GPA or 1500 on the SAT. While those are both impressive stats, your personal statement is a space for you to address deeper things that aren’t listed on your resume. What information can you give readers about yourself to help them get to know who you are?

Authenticity

Be honest and genuine. A lack of authenticity is very clear to readers. Write about what you hold dear to your heart and not what you think readers are expecting to hear from you.

Concrete Examples

Scholarship judges have to read through hundreds of scholarship applications. Make yours stand out. One great way to accomplish this is to add personal anecdotes and examples.

In other words, show, don’t just tell. Instead of writing that you are a highly motivated individual, describe to the readers what that means. Give examples of a time that your motivation helped you achieve something great.

Make sure that your essay flows in a clear and concise manner. It should consist of an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion

Goals

Make sure that your goals are clear to the reader. Organizations award scholarships to invest in a student’s future. Why should they invest in yours? Convince them that winning this scholarship will help you achieve your education and career goals

Tips For Writing a Killer Scholarship Personal Statement

If you are struggling to write your essay, consider creating an outline. This will help you organize your thoughts and decide what points to write about in each paragraph.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to write your personal statement. There should be no spelling or grammar errors.

Finally, follow all of the rules that the scholarship committee has specified. If something isn’t clear, don’t hesitate to reach out to them and ask.

Your personal statement can make or break your chances of winning a scholarship. Work hard on it and deliver a solid essay that shows why you deserve to win.

To Whom It May Concern:

I have fond memories from childhood of putting on lemonade stands with my siblings and friends. When the sun was out, I was the first to rally up the team and get to work. I would try out different prices; charge more money, less money, or even just offer lemonade for donations.

Business was always on my mind. My parents tell me I was born with it; that I’ve always been a negotiator, a creative thinker, and proactive.

By the time I reached the end of high school, the entrepreneur in me knew that it wanted to pursue a career in business. I worked hard throughout high school and got accepted to the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. I began my studies in 2014.

While in college, I started a food delivery service with a friend called Lemonade Stand. The company has grown from two employees to ten. We have recently expanded our services to Michigan State University and the University of Indiana. There are over 2,000 students using our services on a weekly basis. I also spent the summer after my sophomore and junior year working as an intern at Morgan Stanley in New York City.

Since graduating, I have remained on campus at the University of Michigan in order to run my business. I will also be starting my MBA at the University of Michigan in the fall. I know that I am capable of achieving great things with the right role models and education.

I have always believed that there is no such thing as enough education. Education allows us to grow, and to achieve bigger and better things. My past education has allowed me to get to where I am today.

I’m pursuing an MBA to deepen my knowledge and develop my leadership skills. I believe that I will continue to contribute to the community at the University of Michigan. My background and experience in starting my own company and managing others gives me a unique and valuable perspective. An MBA will help me become a strong business leader who will be able to successfully manage others.

As you are well aware, pursuing an MBA is very expensive. This scholarship will assist me greatly in my endeavors and allow me to accomplish my career goals.

Sincerely,
