This research is especially relevant today, given that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/student-loan-debt-statistics#:~:text=54.1%25%20of%20independent%20undergraduate%20students,their%20parents%20accept%20federal%20loans.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30% of undergraduates take on federal student debt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/student-loan-debt-statistics#:~:text=54.1%25%20of%20independent%20undergraduate%20students,their%20parents%20accept%20federal%20loans.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% of students carry student loans from banks or other private sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who participated in the survey?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February 2023, ScholarshipOwl surveyed over 8,000 high school and college-aged students on the ScholarshipOwl scholarship platform to learn more about the impact of student debt on today\u2019s Gen Z students. A total of 8,155 students responded to the survey. 33% of the respondents were undergraduates, primarily college freshmen; 58% were high school students, with the vast majority high school seniors; 6% identified themselves as graduate students; and 4% identified themselves as adult\/non-traditional students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survey questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first survey question was \u201cWhich best describes how much student debt you expect to carry when you graduate with your bachelor\u2019s degree?\u201d Respondents were asked not to include anticipated debt from graduate school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overwhelming majority (90%) responded that they expect to carry some amount of undergraduate student debt upon graduation, with just 10% indicating they did not expect to graduate with any student debt. The full breakdown:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% do not expect to graduate with undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% expect to have up to $5000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% expect to have $5000 &#8211; $10,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% expect to have $10,000 &#8211; $20,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% expect to have $10,000 &#8211; $20,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% expect to have $20,000 &#8211; $30,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% expect to have $30,000 &#8211; $40,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% expect to have $40,000 &#8211; $50,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% expect to have $50,000 &#8211; $75,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9% expect to have $75,000 &#8211; $100,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% expect to have over $100,000 in undergraduate student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8698\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1.png\" alt=\"90% of Gen Z students say they will graduate with student debt. 36% of them expect to owe $50,000 or more for just their bachelor's degree.\" width=\"623\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1.png 623w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1-80x56.png 80w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1-128x89.png 128w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1-320x223.png 320w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1-352x245.png 352w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat1-488x340.png 488w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a follow-up question, we asked, \u201cHow many years do you anticipate it will take you to pay off your undergraduate student debt?\u201d The majority of respondents (61%) believed that they would be free of their student debt within 10 years. This expectation vastly differs from the stark reality of student debt. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onewisconsinnow.org\/twenty-to-life-higher-education-turning-into-multi-decade-debt-sentence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of over 60,000 respondents conducted by One Wisconsin Institute indicated that the average student takes over 20 years to pay off their undergraduate student loans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The full breakdown of our participants\u2019 responses regarding undergraduate student debt:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% do not expect to graduate with student debt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% expect their student debt to be paid in 1 to 3 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21% expect their student debt to be paid in 4 to 6 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26%expect their student debt to be paid in 7 to 10 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13% expect their student debt to be paid in 11 to 15 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% expect their student debt to be paid in 16 to 20 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6% expect it will take more than 20 years to pay off their student debt<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8706\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1.png\" alt=\"How many years do you anticipate it will take you to pay off your undergraduate student debt?\" width=\"637\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1.png 637w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-80x80.png 80w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-128x128.png 128w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-320x318.png 320w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-246x245.png 246w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-342x340.png 342w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-452x450.png 452w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-pie-chart-1-502x500.png 502w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final survey question asked was \u201cOn average, how many scholarships do you apply for each month?\u201d Here, we have some good news. 69% of respondents indicated that they apply for at least 4 scholarships per month &#8211; and of this amount, 22% apply for at least 11 scholarships per month. These results demonstrate that most students who use the ScholarshipOwl platform to apply for scholarships apply for significantly more scholarships year-round as compared to the students and parents surveyed in a 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salliemae.com\/about\/leading-research\/how-america-pays-for-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sallie Mae study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This study found that just 48% of respondents searched for and applied for scholarships throughout the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8700\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2.png\" alt=\"69% of Gen Z students who use the ScholarshipOwl platform say they apply for at least 4 scholarships per month\" width=\"622\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2.png 622w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2-80x50.png 80w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2-128x80.png 128w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2-320x201.png 320w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2-390x245.png 390w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/March-2023-stat2-541x340.png 541w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The full breakdown of responses:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% of respondents indicated that, on average, they apply for less than 1 scholarship per month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% apply for 1 to 3 scholarships per month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% apply for 4 to 6 scholarships per month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19% apply for 7 to 10 scholarships per month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7% apply for 11 to 15 scholarships per month<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15% apply for more than 15 scholarships per month\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To a certain extent, these results aren\u2019t surprising, given that the survey was conducted among students who use the ScholarshipOwl platform to apply for scholarships. As such, this population of Gen Z students do proactively apply for scholarships to reduce their out-of-pocket college cost. What is interesting is that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salliemae.com\/about\/leading-research\/how-america-pays-for-college\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sallie Mae study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 40% of students did not receive any scholarships and\/or grants to reduce their cost of college &#8211; but 68% of these students didn\u2019t even apply for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, prioritizing applying for scholarships can make a significant impact on a student\u2019s ability to pay for college, which in turn reduces the likelihood of needing to rely on student loans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Takeaways for Gen Z students<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey results indicate that Gen Z students vastly underestimate how long it will take them to pay-off their undergraduate student debt. Due to this, students are woefully unprepared for the reality of graduating with student debt, and its impacts on their future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who graduate with student debt delay major life milestones. According to a 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/curiosity\/cnbc-invest-in-you-jan-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of over 5,000 adults conducted by CNBC\/Momentive, 81% of adults with student loans report such delays, with 33% delaying buying a home, 40% delaying investments, and 38% delaying saving for their retirement. 14% postpone getting married, and 16% postpone having children. Student debt creates other burdens that also weigh heavily on borrowers, with 62% of respondents indicating adverse impacts on their mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen Z students need to better understand how student debt can impact their future. Families, educators, and guidance counselors can be part of this solution, by ensuring that students not only are more educated about student loans, but also by helping Gen Z students prioritize applying for scholarships as an alternative to loans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can brands help?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are many federal and state grants available for low-income students, these programs typically only cover tuition costs. Room and board is often more expensive than tuition at public universities. And middle-income students receive little help from federal and state programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scholarships are an alternative that can support students across the income spectrum, yet there are not nearly enough scholarships available to meet the need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brands can be part of the solution by offering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/product-updates\/dont-advertise-to-gen-z-activate-gen-z-at-scale-with-scholarship-campaigns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scholarship campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that support students, while also fulfilling their business and philanthropic goals.
