This research is especially important given that some studies show that some students are <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/apply-to-college\/the-pros-and-cons-of-going-to-college-in-2022\/\">questioning the value of college<\/a>. In fact, a 2021<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecmcgroup.org\/news\/group\/less-than-half-of-high-schoolers-want-to-go-to-a-four-year-college-survey-finds#:~:text=ECMC%20Group%20polled%20more%20than,years%20of%20college%20or%20less.\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ECMC Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> survey showed that less than half of high school students want to go to a four-year college, primarily due to financial concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who participated in the survey?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2023, ScholarshipOwl surveyed over 9,000 high school and college-aged students on the ScholarshipOwl scholarship platform to find out the breadth and depth of the impact of economic conditions on today\u2019s students. A total of 9,108 students responded to the survey. The respondents consisted of: 63% female, 36% male, and 1% who identified themselves as other. 55% identified themselves as high school students, with the vast majority high school seniors; 37% identified themselves as college undergraduate students, primarily college freshmen; 5% identified themselves as graduate students; and 3% identified themselves as adult\/non-traditional students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survey questions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was apparent that the economic and inflationary conditions in the new year had affected millions\u2019 ability to afford basic goods, but how did these conditions affect student\u2019s ability to afford the cost of college?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first survey question was \u201cHave current economic conditions affected your ability to pay for college?\u201d The overwhelming majority (83%) responded \u201cyes\u201d, that the current economic conditions have affected their ability to pay for college, with just 17% indicating no impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8688 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat.png\" alt=\"83% of Gen Z students impacted by economic conditions\" width=\"674\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat.png 674w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat-300x176.png 300w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat-80x47.png 80w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat-128x75.png 128w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat-320x188.png 320w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat-418x245.png 418w, https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Jan-Survey-Stat-580x340.png 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a follow-up question, we asked, \u201cTo reduce college costs, which of the following strategies are you planning on?\u201d Students selected all responses that applied to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of the respondents selected multiple strategies. Applying for scholarships and working part-time while attending school full-time were chosen most often. In addition to economic conditions, students are also concerned about the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/analytics\/391829\/state-of-higher-education-2022.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising cost of college in general<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Together, this has resulted in students looking for a more affordable path to college. Some of the solutions students are choosing (working part-time or full-time, taking a gap year) may not only delay degree completion, but may also result in the student dropping out before completing, or not attending college at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings are coming at a time when the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/19\/only-51percent-of-americans-see-college-as-important-despite-benefits.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perceived value of college has declined<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite the fact that a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/michaeltnietzel\/2021\/10\/11\/new-study-college-degree-carries-big-earnings-premium-but-other-factors-matter-too\/?sh=4e5d11c835cd\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that adults with a bachelor\u2019s degree earn an average of $2.8 million during their careers, which is $1.2 million more than the median worker with a high school diploma. The report also indicated that for every additional level of education achieved, workers tend to earn more than those with less education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all of this is also happening during a critical time for employers, who are struggling to fill job openings with qualified candidates. Businesses have a vested interest in the school-to-work paradigm, ensuring a skilled and educated workforce is available to meet technology advances and production demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brands can help Gen Z students forge a more affordable path to college<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the challenges faced, the good news is that the majority of students still hope to make their dream of a college education a reality. Students will develop positive feelings about the brand and its products, and be more interested in learning more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When students apply for a scholarship campaign, they are opting-in to a relationship with that brand. This presents an opportunity to connect with applicants, and then deepen that relationship over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students looking for internships and employment opportunities will naturally be more interested in working for companies that care about students. A scholarship campaign demonstrates the brand\u2019s care and concern for students far better than an advertising campaign would, and does so for a much lower cost.
