They might be eligible for Mckay Scholarships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The McKay Scholarship Program <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/grants-for-single-mothers\/\">grants<\/a> scholarships to students in Florida who have disabilities. The scholarship allows students to attend a public school of their choice. It also grants students a scholarship to attend a McKay approved private school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 31,000 students receive scholarships every year. Students must be in K-12.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who Qualifies for the McKay Scholarship<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To qualify for a McKay Scholarship, a student must have spent the previous school year in a Florida public school. The student must also have an IEP or a 504 plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students with the following disabilities are eligible for the McKay Scholarship:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intellectual disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speech, hearing and visual impairments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional or behavioral disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learning disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traumatic brain injuries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developmental delays<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autism<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5404\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-1472162072942-cd5147eb3902.jpg\" alt=\"Mckay Scholarships\" width=\"284\" height=\"190\" \/>Students must be over 5 years old by September 1 of the school year that the scholarship is being used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scholarship is valid until one of the following happens:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student returns to a public school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student graduates from high school<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student reaches the age of 22<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scholarship doesn\u2019t depend on a family\u2019s income. If the student qualifies for the program, they receive the funds even if their family has a high income.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is an IEP and a 504?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IEP and 504 are both education plans that protect students with disabilities. They ensure that a student is learning in the least restrictive setting. For each plan, this looks slightly different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) ensures that children with disabilities get specialized instruction and services at the school they are attending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 504 plan ensures that children with disabilities get appropriate accommodation at their school.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Which is Better?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5405\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-1476234251651-f353703a034d.jpg\" alt=\"Mckay Scholarships\" width=\"200\" height=\"299\" \/>Each plan serves different purposes. One plan might be better for one <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/apply-for-scholarships\/scholarships-for-children-of-veterans\/\">child<\/a> while the other is better for another child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some students with disabilities do not need specialized instruction. These are students who can function well in a regular classroom setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, a 504 plan is more appropriate. A 504 plan helps remove barriers so that <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/apply-for-scholarships\/childrens-scholarship-fund\/\">kids<\/a> with disabilities can learn alongside other students in a regular classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An IEP is a better option for students who require more support. These students need specialized instruction. With an IEP, students can get extra services like a special educational setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is the McKay Scholarship Federally Funded?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The McKay scholarship is paid for by state funds. A student receives the state maximum amount or the cost of their private school tuition and fees. Four times a year, the private school receives funding on behalf of your child.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Do You Use the McKay Scholarship?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a student is approved for the scholarship, they have a few options. They can choose to attend a different public school. They may also choose to use the scholarship to attend a participating private school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For private schools, see the list of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridaschoolchoice.org\/Information\/PrivateSchoolDirectory\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participating McKay schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Apply to McKay Scholarships<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents interested in the scholarship program must<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridaschoolchoice.org\/Intent\/McKayIntent\/StudentIntent.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">file intent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a parent files intent, the district\u2019s McKay administrator has 30 days to determine whether a student is eligible. Parents may check<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridaschoolchoice.org\/Intent\/McKayIntent\/StudentIntentInfo.aspx\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see the status of the decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once students are enrolled in the program, parents don\u2019t need to file a new intent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Scholarship Deadlines<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5406\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/photo-1485546246426-74dc88dec4d9.jpg\" alt=\"Mckay Scholarships\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>There are two types of deadlines for the McKay scholarship. But, when you do it determines the amount of funding your child receives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive the full scholarship, parents must file intent by July 3. They also must enroll their child for the upcoming school year by August 2nd.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Final Thoughts<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All students have the right to quality education.
