These \u201crelief companies\u201d usually ask you to pay an up-front or monthly fee. Unfortunately, they are fraud and are after your money. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As student loans continue to rise, student loan forgiveness scams become more common. Companies know that students are struggling to pay their loans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Things To Look Out For<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are contacted by a company which makes one of the following claims, this is most likely a scam:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can help you reduce your monthly payment.\u201d After you pay the company a fee, you may actually be worse off and not able to get your money back.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3300\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/74017304_l.jpg\" alt=\"loans\" width=\"142\" height=\"168\" \/> <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe work with the U.S. Department of Education.\u201d Many fraud companies make this claim. You can see a list of fraud companies banned from debt relief <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/enforcement\/cases-proceedings\/banned-mortgage-relief-debt-relief-companies-people\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAct Immediately before the program is discontinued.\u201d Look out for companies which act aggressively and try to push you to take immediate action. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou are now eligible to receive benefits from a recent law that has passed. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/taxonomy\/term\/90?width=300px&amp;height=auto&amp;className=glossaryterm&amp;closeButton=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal student loan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs may change.\u201d If you are actually concerned about a program ending, contact your student loan servicer or the Department of Education. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How To Identify Scams<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies that require you to pay-up front or monthly fees- It is illegal to charge an up-front fee for this service. If a company tries to get your credit card information before doing anything, that\u2019s a huge red flag. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3480\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/rawpixel-1055774-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"scam\" width=\"222\" height=\"144\" \/>The company promises immediate and total forgiveness or cancellation- Nobody can promise this. Loan forgiveness programs are hard to qualify for. Most programs require that you make years of qualifying payments and are employed in specific fields. Only then can you request for loan forgiveness. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company asks for your FSA ID password. The Department of Education and its partners will never ask you for this information. This ID is used to sign legally binding documents electronically. The scam company can use it to make changes to your account. Never give the FA Id password to anybody.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company asks you to sign and submit a third-party authorization form. This form will allow these companies to talk to your federal loan servicer and make decisions for you. The companies want to be able to change your account and contact info.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies that have spelling and grammar errors. Their communications, such as their emails and letter, may look formal but they often contain a lot of spelling and grammar errors. This is a clear sign that they aren\u2019t affiliated with the ED. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you already shared your information with these companies, take the following steps as soon as possible:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3484\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/alejandro-escamilla-3-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"contact\" width=\"247\" height=\"164\" \/>Immediately log in and change your FSA ID. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact your federal loan servicer and cancel any third-party agreement that is on file. Make sure that no action which you didn\u2019t authorize was taken. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact your bank or credit card company and stop payments to the company. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider filing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov\/#crnt&amp;panel1-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a complaint with the FTC<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have federal loans, you can deal with your student loan servicer directly or get information from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Student Aid website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you have private loans, contact your servicer to see what kind of repayment or forgiveness programs it offers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you qualify for the <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/college-life\/everything-about-student-loan-forgiveness\/\">student loan forgiveness<\/a> program, it can be a great way to reduce your student loans. You just need to make sure that you go the safe and secure route.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, there are no third-party debt relief companies that have a direct relationship with the U.S. Department of Education. Plus, there\u2019s nothing companies can do for you that you don\u2019t do yourself for free.
