But, when it comes to financial aid, even money which you are winning for \u201cfree\u201d could end up costing you money in the form of income tax. The following points should help you determine when grants are taxable income so that you know how to file your taxes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important that you know whether the scholarship money you won is tax-free or taxable. This will save you from unpleasant surprises later on. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A scholarship is completely tax-free, and not considered income, under two conditions: <\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are pursuing a degree at an eligible institution, meaning it has a consistent staff, curriculum and enrolled student body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You use the scholarship money for tuition and other fees like books, supplies and equipment. These must be items which your course requires from all students. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, if you use the scholarship money to pay for classes or school books, you won\u2019t have to pay tax on the money. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Tax-Free Scholarships<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3032\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/piggy-bank-1446864_1920.jpg\" alt=\"concept for Are Grants Taxable Income\" width=\"200\" height=\"195\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veteran Scholarships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Athletic Scholarships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need-Based Education Scholarships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fulbright Scholarships<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some circumstances where your scholarship money is not tax-free. If you are aren\u2019t in a degree program, then your scholarship money will always be taxable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, if you use any of the scholarship money to pay for expenses other than tuition and required supplies, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it will be considered taxable income.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expenses which aren\u2019t considered tax-free include: \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research or teaching stipend<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books and supplies which are not required for your course. For example, if a teacher <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but doesn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a book.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scholarship money on any of the items in the list above then you must pay taxes on them. If you receive a scholarship which covers both tuition AND room and board, only the money spent on tuition will be tax free. On the rest, you must pay taxes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you win a $25,000 scholarship and the tuition of your school is $20,000, you would still have to pay taxes on the remaining $5,000. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education Tax Credits <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3033\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rawpixel-659493-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"concept for Are Grants Taxable Income\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/>If you are disappointed to hear that you may need to pay taxes on some of your scholarship money, wait a moment. You will be happy to know that there are tax credits and deductions to help students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common one is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This is a $2,500 yearly tax credit that undergraduate students can receive for four years of study. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are different eligibility rules for education credits and tax deductions. It is best that you check with the IRS. You can use their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/help\/ita\/am-i-eligible-to-claim-an-education-credit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine eligibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to claim taxable scholarships <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to pay taxes on some (or all) of your scholarship, you might receive a W-2 form from the scholarship provider.
