Spending time abroad not only fulfills academic goals, but also lets you experience a new culture, language, and environment. \u00a0While the overall numbers of U.S. college students who study abroad is still relatively small, it has steadily increased over the last few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the most recent data by the Institute of International Education (IIE)*, the 2013-14 academic year reached a record high with over 300 thousand U.S. students studying abroad. In fact, the amount of students that packed their bags that year more than doubled than the previous decade. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, who exactly is studying abroad, and what are the most popular destinations? Based on a table prepared by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/digest\/d15\/tables\/dt15_310.10.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center for Education Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/en\/Research-and-Insights\/Open-Doors\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IIE\u2019s Open Doors: Report on International Educational Exchange<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we\u2019ve compiled the following infographics to help clarify.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Gender<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately two-thirds of students studying abroad are female. This number hardly changed in 2013-14 school year in comparison to the 2003-04 school year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-gender.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1112\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-gender.jpg\" alt=\"Number of U.S. students studying abroad by gender\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-gender.jpg\">Click to enlarge image<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Race\/Ethnicity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 84% of students studying abroad in 2003-04 were white. This number decreased by 9.4% in 2013-14. Moreover, the black and Hispanic students studying abroad increased by 2.2% and 3.3%, respectively. \u00a0The smallest group of students who study abroad are American Indian or Alaskan Natives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-ethnicity.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1113\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-ethnicity.jpg\" alt=\"Number of U.S. students studying abroad by race\/ethnicity\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/>Click to enlarge image<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academic Level<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junior year is by far the most popular time to travel abroad followed by Senior year. However, the biggest change occurs with Bachelor&#8217;s level students, which saw a 7.2% decrease in the number of students studying abroad, dropping from third most popular in 2003-04 to fifth most popular in 2013-14. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-level.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1114\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarshipowl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/study-abroad-level.jpg\" alt=\"Number of U.S. students studying abroad by academic level\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/>Click to enlarge image<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destination<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not surprisingly, Europe is the most popular destination with over half of the students studying abroad.
